Large data centers in particular require enormous amounts of electricity and water. If this energy does not come from sustainable sources, AI itself can become a burden on the environment. Therefore, the use of AI in the climate sector should be designed responsibly. I rate the chances of AI in healthcare much higher. AI can be a great support, especially in the early detection of diseases. It can help to find suitable treatment options and to better adapt individual therapies. Research into new drugs can also be accelerated by AI, as large amounts of research data can be analyzed more quickly. AI also offers many opportunities in the field of food security. The use of fertilisers and pesticides could be controlled in a more targeted manner, and irrigation systems could also be used more efficiently. This can optimize agricultural yields and conserve resources. In addition, AI can be used in some regions to make knowledge accessible via digital platforms. This knowledge can help to achieve better harvest results and improve food security in the long term.
The greatest opportunities lie where large amounts of data can be evaluated more quickly and better decisions can be prepared. In the climate sector, AI can help to optimise energy consumption, control grids more efficiently or detect environmental changes at an earlier stage. In the healthcare sector, it can support diagnostics, prevention and research. In agriculture, AI can help to use water, fertilizer and land in a more targeted manner and make yields more stable. Their greatest benefit lies in using limited resources more intelligently.
I don't think that current AI is able to tackle any of the mentioned global issues, because these issues have systemic roots and cannot be solved by a mere tool operating in the confines of the very same system. Looking at alternative systems that make use of AI to prevent man-made catastrophies and injustices, the work of Jacque Fresco would be a good starting point, who suggested a computer based survey of earth's ressources and an AI based distribution system, making away with the need for money as the dominant supply-and-demand indicator as well as incentive.
I don’t see such a direct influence, but rather, I see the opportunity to empower scientists and groups of people who strive every day for the betterment of all humans. I know personally people who work in biotechnology and have been pushed further in their research capacities thanks to advances in AI, for example, for sequencing genomes way faster than ever before in history.
The biggest opportunities are in areas with large amounts of data and urgent decisions. AI can help predict climate risks, optimize energy use, and support smart cities. In healthcare, it can assist diagnosis and improve systems. In food security, it can help farming, reduce waste, and improve logistics. AI is a tool, but people must use it wisely.
AI is currently strong in digital professions, where tasks are digitally defined: you have files, documents, and software systems, and you need to perform a task within them to produce files as a result. It’s only a matter of time before AI surpasses humans in these areas, and in many tasks, it already does. For example, in healthcare, when analyzing test results, symptoms, and making diagnoses, AI works very, very well. In the physical world, where you have to do something with your hands and in coordination with other people, AI isn’t very advanced. For example, if you need to renovate an apartment (bathrooms, walls, flooring, furniture), AI is of very little help there. In the long term, I expect AI and robotics to automate a large portion of repetitive human activities—manufacturing, agriculture, construction, transportation—and thus help address humanity’s global challenges.
